“Honor thy mistake as a hidden intention.” — Brian Eno
Join UK photo artist Nicki as she walks us through her world, pushing the limits of how we see through the lens of an iPhone; literally painting with light, creating impressionist photo paintings, the results of which are often cut up and combined with photos of marks, patterns, textures, shapes and text (all captured on the iPhone) to create her more abstract and expressive collage works. Both techniques begin with a single iPhone photo.
Nicki’s world is seen in layers, where lines, forms and textures are isolated from the real world, colliding and merging in new imagined worlds where, guided by her intuition, the image is allowed to unfold as each new element is placed. An open mind and playfulness is key to Nicki’s approach to her mobile art where mistakes frequently become the beginnings of new artistic journeys.
Often abstract; expressing sound, emotion and experience, Nicki likes to play with perceptions, adores ambiguity, and engaging the viewer – often leaving spaces for the viewer to complete the story.
As well as demonstrating her approach to creating personal and expressive collages using apps like Leonardo and Snapseed, Nicki will also be sharing her fascination with painting with light on the iPhone, revealing how she creates impressionistic works of art, treading the fine line between photography and painting, using her experimental iPhone capture techniques using the app Slow Shutter Cam.
Nicki Fitz-Gerald is an artist, author, educator and graphic designer from the United Kingdom. She began her career as a book jacket and magazine feature illustrator working in mixed media and collage until she discovered the freedom and infinite creative possibilities of creative iPhone photography in 2009 opening up a whole new artistic journey.
She has given workshops and speaks and writes on the subject of iPhone photography and art delivering keynote speeches and photography workshops at the groundbreaking Mobile journalism conference in Ireland in Mojocon in 2015 & 2016. Her iPhone images have been exhibited internationally, winning several Photography Awards and featured in magazines and on book covers including the image “Flamin’ Amy” featured on the front cover of the book she co-authored with Bob Weil, The Art of iPhone Photography from Rocky Nook Books, 2013. She recently launched her online workshop Adventures in Creative Mobile Artistry, a ten lesson video course on how to use the moments and influences from everyday life to create expressive composites on an iPhone including footage on how Nicki creates her more painterly works using Slow Shutter Cam.
