The Nude as Metaphor
Learn how your eye sees shape.
“The great photographers we admire all have their personal ‘visual signature’ by which we instantly recognize their work. There are consistent visual indicators such as unique shapes and forms that are inherent in the work. These indicators are evident in the images of all serious photographers. However, they are often not well perceived or understood by the photographer because of his/her emotional involvement. This workshop will point out these signs and signifiers to the participant during the personal portfolio reviews that will be part of this workshop.”
Inherent in the work of all serious photographers is a system of recurring forms as well as a consistent attitude towards composition. A visual signature is built by understanding these shapes, forms and attitudes. The workshop will address these issues on a shot by shot basis throughout the course.
The Los Angeles Festival of Photography proudly presents a three (3) day workshop, “Photographing the Nude” with internationally acclaimed photographer Ralph Gibson.
Set in sunny Los Angeles, California, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand your visual horizons under the guidance of one of the great masters in contemporary photography. Take part and experience a renewed sense of energy, inspiration and vitality in your photography.
The three days will consist of a number of opportunities to advance your skills, shape your unique vision, and advance your photography to a new level.
Be inspired to break into new visual territory, and create images you’ll be proud to add to your portfolio.
You will be working with models every day (at a ratio of one model to every five students) both in studio and in exclusive locations around Los Angeles. There will be ample shooting opportunity both in studio and on location over the four-day period and lots of time has been reserved for in-depth review and critique of your imagery as well.
Ralph Gibson is a master of dramatic understatement.
Ralph’s high-contrast pictures – usually focusing on one geometric element (the corner of a room) or a single human gesture (the curve of a hand) – form a kind of dream-narrative when gathered together.
Or, as Gibson puts it…“I embrace the abstract in photography and exist on a few bits of order extracted from the chaos of reality.”
The workshop will begin with an in-depth review and critique of each participant’s portfolio or body of work. After this initial session, the critiques will continue throughout the workshop on a frequent basis.
Each day will present a different location and shooting opportunity. Using the nude figure as the point of departure, participants will learn how to see in terms of texture, shape and form.
Mr. Gibson will address topics such as: finding “your visual signature”, seeing vs. perception, the importance of point of departure in your image making process, the alchemy of light and film, and much more.
Students have raved about their experience with Mr. Gibson, calling the workshop “…a life changing experience”.
