Ken Gonzales-Day, who received the Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography in 2017, will discuss his experience as artist, author, Professor of Art at Scripps College, and exhibiting photographer. Topics may include, grants, fellowships, publishing, public art, university galleries, and teaching.

Depending on group interest, participants may be able to craft/refine aspects of their own artist’s statements.

Preparing for Portfolio Reviews

Introducing yourself and your work to photography professionals at portfolio reviews is an effective route to building important relationships and advancing your career.

FotoFest Executive Director Steven Evans discusses how artists can prepare for portfolio reviews in order to maximize the greatest benefit from their participation and investment. Evans will discuss setting objectives, editing portfolios, presentation, getting to know reviewers, what to do during the review, and how to follow up effectively after the review.

What determines how photographs are purchased in order to create a successful collection? Ken Gonzales-Day’s interdisciplinary and conceptually grounded projects consider the history of photography, the construction of race, and the limits of representational systems ranging from the lynching photograph to museum display. The Searching for California Hang Trees series offered a critical look at the legacies of landscape photography in the West while his most recent project considers the sculptural depiction of race. Using the sculpture and portrait bust collections of several major museums including The J. Paul Getty Museum, The Field Museum, The Museum of Man in San Diego, L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, The Bode Museum, and Park Sanssouci in Potsdam, Profiled is as an exploration of the influence of eighteenth century “scientific” thought on twenty-first century institutions ranging from the prison to the museum. His Photo Arts Council (PAC) Prize winning book, Profiled, was published in 2011 by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

Ken Gonzales-Day lives and works in Los Angeles, and is professor of art at Scripps College, Claremont, CA. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography in 2017, the first LACMA Photo Arts Council (PAC) Prize, Creative Capital Award; Chercheur Accueilli, Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA); COLA (City of Los Angeles) Individual Artist Award; Art Matters Grant; California Community Foundation/Getty Trust Mid-Career Award; Durfee Fondation ACG; Graves Award for the Humanities; Visiting Scholar/Artist-in-Residence, Getty Research Institute; Senior Fellow, American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution; Fellow, Rockefeller Foundation Study and Conference Center, Bellagio, Italy; and, Van Lier Fellow, ISP (Independent Study Program), Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.

Steven Evans is an artist, writer, and curator, and Executive Director of FotoFest International. Appointed in 2014, he is responsible for exhibitions, art programs, administration and Biennial organization. With FotoFest co-founders Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin, Evans co-curated and organized the FotoFest 2016 Biennial central exhibition CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES: Looking at the Future of the Planet. With Watriss, he co-edited the hardcover book CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES (Amsterdam: Schilt Publishing, 2016). From 2014-2017 Evans curated the FotoFest inter-Biennial exhibition I Am A Camera, and co-curated International Discoveries V and International Discoveries VI, featuring new artists from around the world. He recently represented FotoFest at photography events and festivals in Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Korea, Lithuania, and Russia.

Evans has served as a panelist for the National Endowment of Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. Prior to FotoFest, Evans worked with a wide range of artists and collaborators as Managing Director of the Dia:Beacon Museum in New York State and as director of the Linda Pace Foundation in San Antonio, Texas. His own artwork incorporates a range of media including photography. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, Stockholm, Berlin, and elsewhere.

Besides lecturing, presenting seminars and moderating panels, Weiss works with photographers helping to guide their career as an artist and a business by creating an artistic marketable identity that will improve their opportunities for success.
